Fourth of July!

Fourth of July!

Make sure you’re up-to-date on firework safety, local restrictions

Let’s begin with pointing out where you can legally discharge fireworks. We checked with the county Fire Marshal Steve Deffibaugh, and he advises that most cities prohibit the sell, possession and discharge of fireworks within their city limits. There are a few in Collin County that do permit fireworks sales, so it’s best to contact your local city government first. We’ve included links below to major cities’ websites on fireworks restrictions.

Also, make sure you’re not in a city’s Extra Territorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) when you set off that string of firecrackers. Here’s a link to the county Fire Marshal’s web pages on fireworks safety and restrictions in rural areas and lakes, and our Health Department’s advice on firework safety. While there are no prohibited acts for unincorporated areas on when fireworks can be discharged, keep in mind that some rural spots can prohibit the discharge of fireworks. For example, Lavon Lake is controlled by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the sale, possession and discharge of fireworks is prohibited. County Law Enforcement Officers, such as the Sheriff’s Lake Patrol, are authorized to issue citations for any violations on Corps property.

City ordinances on fireworks prohibitions can be found online for Allen, Frisco, McKinney, Plano, Richardson & Wylie. For other cities’ contact information or websites, please go to our City Online Services guide. Just make sure you check with your local officials before launching that bottle rocket.

Many Collin County cities also host fireworks displays along with parades, concerts, even a street dance here and there. We collected some of the better-known events and posted links to these below. For those who have gone to Myers Park for the Forever Free event in past years, has been re-invented and moved to the soccer complex at Craig Ranch in McKinney.
