Roland Lynn Walker was born in Cooper, Texas on December
31, 1923. He entered the U.S. Air Force on January 19, 1943. Basic training
at Sheppard Field, Texas. Additional training at Chanute Field, Illinois
and Westover Field, MA.
He served as a B-24 gunner, flying out of Hardwick,
England. On February 22, 1944, his plane was shot down on his first mission
over Gotha, Germany.
He was taken prisoner and was held in Stalag Luft VI
and IV in Lithuania and Poland for fourteen and a half months. He was
in the Heydekrug Run from station to Luft in Keifeheide, Poland. During
the last three months he was in Germany, all POW's were moved out of the
camps and marched from place to place until the war ended. It was estimated
that they walked approximately 1,000 miles during those three months.
He was liberated on May 2, 1945.
